Where can I find info about the open call?

Sorry, the call is closed. But don't worry: the BAD Award is an annual competition, so we hope to receive your application next year! Did you apply and are you wondering about the time table? You can find all info here.

I did not receive a confirmation by email. Did my application come through?

If you did not receive a confirmation by email, even though on the website it stated that your application was successful, an error may have occurred. In that case, please contact us via

I am still a student. Can I apply nevertheless?

Yes, you can. However, you have to graduate before 1 June 2022 (in the field of art or design, and at either bachelor’s or master’s level). If you’ll graduate later than 1 June 2022, unfortunately you are not eligible to participate this year. This also applies when you have graduated within the last five years, but are studying again, due to the very time-consuming nature of the project.

But don't worry. The BAD Award is a yearly competition, so there will be plenty of opportunities to participate!

Do I have to pay a fee to apply?

No, admission is free!

I am not an EU-citizen. Can I apply?

Yes, you can! Due to practical considerations (travel expenses, visa rules), the pre-selection rules are somewhat different. Check out '10. Special Conditions' on

Can I participate with others?

Yes, you can. As long as the main applicant has graduated within the last five years in the field of art or design (at either master's or bachelor's level). The prize money will stay the same (25,000 euros), regardless the amount of artists /designers in your team.

Are there age restrictions?

No, there is no age limit. There are only graduation rules: if you graduated within the last five years in the field of art or design at either the master’s or bachelor’s level (and comply with the other rules), you can apply for the award, regardless your age.

What are the research groups?

The BAD Award is a collaboration between artists/designers and scientists. When writing your proposal, make sure to take a good look at the research institutions you'd like to collaborate with. They all have their own expertise and study focus, so choose wisely and make sure their practice and your ideas match. In the application form, you can list maximum 3 research groups.

When you get selected, you will be paired with one of the groups. You’ll further develop the idea into a joint project proposal together with the scientist(s) you are matched with. No later than Tuesday 17 May 2022, you submit the final proposal. 3 winning teams get the opportunity to realise their project with 25.000 euros prize money.

I have graduated some years ago. Can I still apply?

Yes, you can apply if you have graduated within the last five years in the field of art or design, at either the master’s or bachelor’s level.

If you graduated more than 5 years ago, you are unfortunately not eligible to apply.
